Nina Kriel

Dr Nina Kriel is currently in private practice in King William’s Town and is a past director of the SAOA in the portfolio professional development. She has addressed congresses on various topics including the role of women in healthcare, medical ethics and genetic conditions, lectures marketing and practice management to final year optometry students at the University of Johannesburg and sits on the HPCSA’s Professional Board for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians.

By her own admission, she is obsessed with spelling and grammar which, together with an honours degree in English prompted her to offer her services when the Optiforum required an editor in 2006.

The Optiforum is the mouthpiece of the SAOA, keeping membership informed of events and the activities of the staff and office bearers of the Association. It offers a forum for members to voice their thoughts or concerns and share anecdotes and experiences. It covers the whole spectrum of practice of the eye care practitioner, from medical law to business management strategies and, of course, clinical patient care. The activities of the eye care professions’ students feature regularly, as do sections dedicated to staff enrichment. Continuing practitioner development is an important and valuable aspect of this quarterly publication.
